SEMIOTICS SELF-PORTRAIT

Tyler asked us to create a self portrait in which we represented ourselves with the different levels of semiotics (icon index and symbol).  Here are the images I came up with to represent myself

This image I chose as my icon, I feel even though the area in focus is only my hair those who know me would say its far more then enough information to identify myself.

The shoes are the same trashed ones I wear say in and day out.  While other then the shoes, it is the manner in which they are torn which is also indexical of me which derives from my passion for skateboarding.

The abnormally of a yellow substance on a band-aid, at first glance can seem gross.  Then paired along side of the skateboard shoes also lends to the symbolism of injury.  Yet I was trying to communicate the idea of yellow representing creativity and it being found on a band-aid representing a creative person.

Although I feel this didn’t communicate my exact intentions It was interesting to observe the level of perception my images produced for people.  I think this has a lot to do with the level of control we as designers have on people.  No matter what those who we are communicating to are always bringing outside experiences and their own quidty to the work we are presenting to have certain meaning.  This is were the difficulty arises as the level of communication differs from person to person.

  2. Your self-portrait semiotic images are great! It’s hilarious because the hair and the shoes are the things I would use to describe you…that aside from “dude”
